Introduction to Silver Clay

£125.00

Give me the info…

Let your imagination run wild with this introduction to the magic medium of silver clay! This exciting class will introduce you to the tools used, basic techniques including torch firing and kiln firing, and finishing to transform silver clay into whatever your imagination (and skills ) will allow.

We’ll give you a whopping 10g of silver clay to work with, where you’ll have the opportunity to play with texture, shape, and 3D creations. Should you get carried away there will be the opportunity to buy more clay on the day. I mean, why wouldn’t you?

Silver Clay was developed by Mitsubishi Materials. Using fine silver dust an organic binder alongside water, they produced a clay like material which is very easy to manipulate and is perfect for producing organic textures and form. The water evaporates during drying, the organic binder burns away during firing which, in turn, leaves pure silver [we think it’s witchcraft].

Can I do this class?

This class is for anyone who wants to experience the medium of silver clay. It is designed to enable not only complete beginners to produce jewellery but also demonstrate the interesting properties of silver clay to those with intermediate or advanced knowledge of jewellery making.

What happens?

You will learn how to work metal clay in its raw state to make creative and unique pieces of jewellery. You will get familiar with how the clay works and how to form, shape and refine it. You will also learn how to fire the clay and how to finish off, using different methods to bring out the best in your creations. Sounds awesome, I’m in!

Do I need to bring anything?

Bring a sketchbook or something for taking notes etc. Everyone will have their own bench with access to all the tools required to make jewellery. You won’t need anything else as we provide the equipment needed for this session. We will provide you with 10g of silver to start off with. This is usually plenty but if you would like to order more, you can purchase extra from your tutor. This can be as little or as much as you are willing to spend.

Please wear long hair tied up [or bring something to do so], don’t wear open-toed shoes and keep loose-fitting clothing to a minimum.

If you need glasses to see things close up, please bring them with you. Making jewellery is fiddly!

Who is teaching me?

Our Taster Sessions are taught by one of our excellent team of tutors, who we handpicked from the nests of the ancient rulers. They will devote their entire life to you.
