meet your maker 2019/20 @ duff house
with Historic environment scotland & craft scotland
Here at Vanilla Ink - The Smiddy, we are keen to promote the heritage of Banff Silver and bring this local traditional craft back to our north-east town. We are therefore delighted to work with Historic Environment Scotland and Craft Scotland again on the second Meet Your Maker Project in Aberdeenshire, focussing on the heritage craft of silversmithing with Young People.
Throughout 2019 & 2020 we will be working with Historic Environment Scotland, Craft Scotland, Aberdeenshire Council’s Community Learning & Development team and local young people on this exciting project based around Duff House in Banff.
Students will be working with our silversmith, Megan Falconer, to develop skills and create work inspired by the local gem that is Duff House. They will learn about the historical links to silversmithing in Banff and modern & traditional techniques used in silversmithing.
Once again, we are opening our doors on a Tuesday evening to local Young People aged 16-25 who want to gain some experience working in our studio and learn some new skills in a friendly warm environment.
Classes start on the 20th August 2019, consisting of three 8-week blocks covering basic techniques in silversmithing. The first 5 weeks of each block will be developing skills and techniques, whilst the final 3 weeks will be creating your own pieces, inspired by Duff House. Just choose which block you fancy…
This year, each 8-week block will focus on a different theme:
Silver Candle Holders: Beginning Tuesday 20th August 2019 - 8-week block, 6.30-9.30pm
Silver Lidded Boxes: Beginning Tuesday 29th October 2019 - 8-week block, 6.30-9.30pm
Silver Cutlery: Beginning Tuesday 4th February 2020 - 8-week block, 6.30-9.30pm
***Best News is …these CLASSES ARE FREE… come join us ***
All applicants must reside in Aberdeenshire. This opportunity is focussed on the Banff Academy School Network, and applicants from this area will be given priority. This project would also benefit Higher & Advanced Higher Art Students who wish to develop their portfolio work.
* Please note: Only one 8-week block per person will be allocated to allow as many Young People as possible to participate..
Please apply by 5pm on 19th August 2019
We are busy sourcing funding and developing other opportunities particularly for Young People and recent graduates. Keep an eye out on Social Media for all the news and developments…
