This is a 4-week block of skills sessions for those wishing to practice and perfect their jewellery making.
10am-12pm on a Sunday. The block will run for four weeks from the 1st of May to the 22nd of May.
These sessions are designed to encourage those with some previous experience to practice, practice and practice again in the company of other fellow makers! Each week we will focus on one skill providing demos, tips and skills practice activities that will help you improve and perfect your skill set by the end of the block.
CAN I DO THIS CLASS?
These sessions are for those with some jewellery making experience. Ideally, you will have completed an intermediate block session with us (or the equivalent elsewhere). Those who have completed our beginners block plus extra taster sessions are also welcome to give it a try.
WHAT HAPPENS?
The four weeks of skills practice in this block will help you refresh, improve and perfect some key jewellery making skills to make you a more confident jewellery maker.
Week 1 - Improving your soldering skills - various techniques and methods on all things soldering
Week 2 - Decorative saw piercing practice - straight-line sawing contest as well as creating a decorative design to test your patience [sorry] and your will to improve
Week 3 - Cabochon pendant stone setting - design and build a bezel setting for a 15mm round cabochon
Week 4 - Cabochon pendant stone setting - time to set that stone and get it finished!
All tools and base materials are provided with a limited selection of silver findings and wire at an extra cost. Please be prepared to buy your own precious materials ahead of the class.
Please wear long hair tied up [or bring something to do so], don’t wear open-toed shoes and keep loose-fitting clothing to a minimum.
If you need glasses to see things close up, please bring them with you. Making jewellery is fiddly!
At this time we can’t let you borrow our aprons, you are advised to bring your own if you want to protect your clothes.
Due to current protocols, students will need to wear a face-covering [unless they are exempt]. You will be sent the most up to date protocols and clear instructions ahead of the class. Unfortunately, we cannot provide refreshments at this time but please feel free to bring your own water bottles/juice or a flask of tea/coffee.
WHO IS TEACHING ME?
Amy Ferguson is a designer, jeweller, silversmith and marine conservationist (yeh, WOW was our reactions too!) We are excited to welcome Amy to our team of tutors at Vanilla Ink The Smiddy for 2022. With her experience of travelling all over the world with her work in marine conservation and being based in the beautiful Scottish Highlands, Amy brings a unique perspective to her making. She loves nothing more than sharing her skills and insight with others.
