GIVE ME THE INFO…
Like the idea of using sea glass found right here on the Banff shores? In this session we are going to combine the beauty of found polished sea glass with the adventurous technique of sand casting. You will be gently guided through the wonderful but sometimes unpredictable technique of sandcasting.
Choosing your sea glass, smash it up and cast it in silver. What could be more fun?
Choose to either bring your own found sea glass (if you don’t mind your finds being smashed up in the name of amazing jewellery making) or simply choose from some of the pieces we’ve found on Banff beach.
CAN I DO THIS CLASS?
This is one of our classic entry-level classes, so it’s perfect for complete beginners. Don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like this before, this is what Taster Sessions are for! And if you have made stuff before, then you’ll still have an absolutely SMASHING time!
WHAT HAPPENS?
You will start with choosing one of our pre-carved moulds and learn how to set up your flask for the casting process. Then comes the fun: choosing your sea glass & smash it up. Finally, you learn to cast your piece yourself, finishing with clean-up and soldering the jump ring to make your beautiful, unique pendant full of sparkle.
DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?
Bring a sketchbook or something for taking notes etc. Everyone will have their own bench with access to all the tools and materials required to make their pieces. You won’t need anything else as we provide the equipment needed for this session [unless you are bringing your own sea glass].
Please wear long hair tied up [or bring something to do so], don’t wear open-toed shoes and keep loose-fitting clothing to a minimum.
If you need glasses to see things close up, please bring them with you. Making jewellery is fiddly!
WHO IS TEACHING ME?
Mason is our Jeweller in Residence who takes inspiration for her work from the great outdoors and her dedication to the environment, leading her to rejuvenate old and rejected pieces pairing them with precious metals and stones. She says "by bringing together the old and the new we can really push the envelope of creativity, stretching the possibilities of art and designing something innovative and unique."
Mason loves activity and exercise, food and discovering new places. She is always ready to say yes to a new adventure. Y’know, like moving up to Banff to represent us!
