Exhibitions and public engagement

The Smiddy Gallery is a contemporary craft gallery presenting work made within and alongside the Smiddy.

The gallery exists to share high-quality craft with the public, to support makers through thoughtful presentation, and to contribute to the cultural life of Banff and North East Scotland. It is a calm and welcoming space where visitors can spend time with work, materials, and process without pressure or expectation.

The gallery sits in close relationship to the workshop and the wider life of the Smiddy, reflecting the values of care, material understanding, and professional practice that shape everything we do.

  • The gallery presents a curated programme of exhibitions and focused displays.

Work shown may include pieces by Smiddy residents, invited external makers, and Smiddy’s own silver and jewellery collections. All work is selected for quality, clarity, and alignment with the context and values of the Smiddy.

The gallery is part of a working craft space, not separate from it. Exhibitions are shaped to sit alongside learning, making, and community activity, rather than operating in isolation.

  • The gallery is not a high-volume retail space.
It is not an open-access exhibition venue.
Exhibiting in the gallery is not an automatic outcome of courses, residencies, or membership.

Clear boundaries help ensure exhibitions remain meaningful and manageable within a working environment.

Exhibitions

The gallery hosts a changing programme of exhibitions and focused displays.

Exhibitions are curated thoughtfully and developed in conversation with the wider work of the Smiddy, rather than through open submission by default.
