Make

For practitioners, graduates, and regular makers

Making at the Smiddy supports people who want time, space, and continuity for independent practice within a professional craft environment.

This part of the Smiddy is for people who already have experience using tools and materials and who are able to work independently. Making here is about focus, care, and sustained engagement, rather than speed, output, or performance.

Access to making at the Smiddy is intentional and clearly defined. Different routes exist to support different needs, working patterns, and stages of practice.

Ways to make at the Smiddy

Making at the Smiddy takes several distinct forms. Each option is clearly defined so people can choose the route that best suits their experience and needs.

Residencies

Time-limited, structured access

Residencies provide focused time within a professional craft environment. They are designed to support continuity of practice over a defined period.

Residencies are suitable for graduates and established practitioners who want sustained access and structure.

Membership

Ongoing eligibility for independent access

Membership provides ongoing eligibility to book Studio Access sessions within the shared workshop.

It is suitable for people with prior experience who want regular, independent access rather than time-limited residency periods.

Studio Access

Bookable independent use of the workshop

Studio Access refers to scheduled, bookable sessions for independent making in the main Smiddy workshop.

Access is capacity managed and available to Members and, where applicable, Residents.

Studio & Space Hire

Short-term hire for specific uses

Studio & Space Hire offers short-term access for defined activities, such as teaching, projects, or professional hire.

This option is distinct from Membership, Studio Access, and Residencies and is arranged on a case-by-case basis.

Making and learning

Making at the Smiddy is distinct from learning.

If you are looking for structured teaching, introductions to making, or skills development, you may wish to explore the Learn section instead.

If you are unsure

If you are unsure which route is right for you, you are encouraged to read through each option carefully or get in touch to ask questions before committing.

Choosing how to engage should feel clear, not pressured.
