Residencies
Time, space, and continuity for practice
Residencies at the Smiddy provide structured access to space within a professional craft environment.
They are designed for practitioners who already work independently and want sustained time to develop their practice with clarity and routine.
The Smiddy offers two residency types:
Self-Directed Practitioner Residency
Graduate Residency
Each is distinct and serves a different stage of practice.
Self-Directed Practitioner Residency
Independent focused practice
The Self-Directed Practitioner Residency offers flexible, independent residencies with dedicated studio space for established and mid-career practitioners.
These residencies prioritise autonomy, focus, and sustained making.
Graduate Residency
Supported early practice after education
The Graduate Residency is a six-month, supported residency for recent graduates transitioning from education into independent practice.
It offers structured access, routine, and integration into the working life of the Smiddy.
Choosing a residency?
Residencies are not the right route for everyone.
If you are looking for ongoing but flexible access, Membership may be more appropriate. If you are looking for structured learning, Courses or Private Skills Sessions may be a better fit.
What Smiddy Residencies are
Residencies provide time-based access to Smiddy spaces within a shared professional environment.
Residents work independently and are supported through clear structures, agreed access arrangements, and respect for the space and others using it. Designated studio spaces are combined with conditional access to shared workshop facilities.
Residencies are designed to support practice, not to produce outcomes on demand.
Enquiries
Residencies are offered subject to capacity and suitability.
If you are interested in a residency and unsure which option fits, you are welcome to get in touch to discuss this before applying.
