Learn

For anyone who wants to learn, try, or build

Learning at the Smiddy brings together all skill-based activity, including structured courses, short experiences, private skills sessions, and education-focused workshops.

This part of the Smiddy is for anyone who wants to learn, try something new, or build confidence working with tools and materials. No prior experience is required unless clearly stated.

Teaching at the Smiddy is calm, well supported, and delivered within a professional makers’ workshop. We prioritise clear explanation, safe working, and time to understand processes properly, rather than speed or performance.

Different ways to learn and take part

There is no single way to begin.

Some people start with a short experience to see what making feels like. Others prefer the structure of a course. Some return to learning through private skills sessions after time away, or when they want to focus on a specific technique.

You are welcome to take part in one area only, or to move between different offers over time. There is no expected pathway and no hierarchy between ways of learning.

Each offer exists for a specific reason and is clearly defined, so you can choose what feels right for you.

Courses

Structured learning taught properly

Courses are the Smiddy’s core learning programmes in jewellery and silversmithing. They are designed to teach skills properly, build confidence at the bench, and support people in developing a solid foundation in making.

Courses are taught in small groups and focus on understanding tools, materials, and processes. They are calm, focused, and welcoming, without being rushed or informal.

Experiences

Welcoming introductions to making

Experiences are short, carefully structured sessions designed to introduce people to making in a supportive environment.

They are ideal if you are curious about jewellery or silversmithing and want to experience working with tools and materials without committing to a longer course. Experiences prioritise confidence, clarity, and a positive first encounter with making.

Private Skills Sessions

Focused learning at your own pace

Private Skills Sessions offer one-to-one or small group teaching focused on specific jewellery or silversmithing skills.

These sessions are suited to people who want time to revisit a technique, build confidence through repetition, or develop further skills beyond an initial introduction. Sessions are structured and skills-led, with a clear focus agreed in advance.

Private Skills Sessions include both defined skills sessions and individually designed training packages.

Schools & Outreach Workshops

Education-focused creative workshops

Schools and Outreach Workshops introduce young people and community groups to making through hands-on, well supported sessions.

Workshops are adapted to suit the age, experience, and setting of each group. They prioritise safe engagement, curiosity, and confidence through doing, and are educational in intent.

Learning at the Smiddy

Learning at the Smiddy is shaped by clarity, care, and professional standards. We teach in a way that supports understanding rather than speed, and confidence rather than performance.

If you are unsure where to begin, you are welcome to read through each section or get in touch to ask questions. Choosing how to engage should feel clear, not pressured.
