This class combines two of our favourite things in one taster day class- carving and molten metal. The possibilities are endless (well there are some limitations but that is just to save breaking your bank).
Come spend the day carving a master pattern from wax and then sand cast it to give you an instant casting creation. You’ll get to do some meditative carving with some hints and tips for success from our lovely tutor AND you’ll get to have a go at melting and pouring molten scrap silver to create a sand cast masterpiece of your very own.
CAN I DO THIS CLASS?
You can be a beginner for this class but it may suit those who have previously taken one of our entry-level workshops and have a bit of making experience. Pouring molten metal is tricky but our tutor will always help with that. Some experience in cleaning and finishing a piece of jewellery is very handy to get everything done in the time.
WHAT HAPPENS?
Carve up a ring or small pendant shape in wax - don’t worry if you haven’t done this before we can show you how and provide you with all the tools.
Learn how to make a sand casting mould with your wax carving then have some fun melting silver and pouring it into the sand mould.
Cast pieces can then be clean and finished to take home.
DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?
Bring a sketchbook or something for taking notes etc. Everyone will have their own bench for finishing with access to all the tools and materials required to make your casting. You won’t need anything else as we provide the equipment needed for this session.
Please wear long hair tied up [or bring something to do so], don’t wear open-toed shoes and keep loose-fitting clothing to a minimum.
If you need glasses to see things close up, please bring them with you. Making jewellery is fiddly!
At this time we can’t let you borrow our aprons, you are advised to bring your own if you want to protect your clothes.
Due to current protocols, students will need to wear a face-covering [unless they are exempt]. You will also be sent the most up to date protocols and clear instructions ahead of the class. Unfortunately, we cannot provide refreshments at this time but please feel free to bring your own water bottles/juice or a flask of tea/coffee.
